Scenic and Historic Byways in West Virginia The Coal Heritage Trail National Scenic Byway follows state route WV16 and US52 to the south from Beckley to Pineville and Bluefield. The Highland Scenic Highway is in the Monongahela National Forest in southeastern West Virginia, directly east of Charleston. The Historic National Road has been designated an All-American Road. It runs through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. In West Virginia it follows US40 from Wheeling to Mount Echo where it lies parallel to and north of Interstate 70. The Midland Trail National Scenic Byway follows US60 from Charleston southeastwards to White Sulphur Springs. The Washington Heritage Trail National Scenic Byway is in the northeastern corner of West Virginia. Interstate 81 and US522 cross the trail southbound from Interstate 70 near Hagerstown in Maryland.
