The Virginia State Parks web site is an excellent resource to discover many of the outdoor recreational opportunities in the state. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority is another very good source of information about parks in the state. The Virginia Historical Society is located in Richmond and is an excellent resource for learning about the state's past and its people, many of whom played important roles in national history. Westmoreland County, between Washington, D.C. and Chesapeake Bay, has a number of historic sites. The National Park Service has properties in Virginia that are among the state's most popular attractions. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground on the park service's web site lists and maps historic sites along or adjacent to US15 in Virginia's Piedmont. The web site for the Association for the Preservation of Virgina Antiquities has many pages about places of historical interest, including the Jamestown Rediscovery archeological project. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has a large number of locations throughout the United States that will appeal to travelers with an interest in nature, wildlife, archeology and history. Belle Grove Plantation near Middletown; Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House in Alexandria; James Madison's Montpelier at Montpelier Station; Oatlands, south of Leesburg and Woodlawn in Mount Vernon are on a list of historic sites compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The web site for Fairfax County has pages describing places of historic and other interests for visitors to the county. Fredericksburg has many places of historic and scenic interest in and around the city that will be of interest to visitors. The National Slavery Museum is planned to open in Fredericksburg.
