Scenic and Historic Byways in Virginia The Blue Ridge Parkway National Scenic Byway runs parallel to the North Carolina/Tennessee state line is western North Carolina. The southern section of the parkway circles around the southern and eastern sides of Asheville where it crosses Interstate 26 and Interstate 40. The parkway passes near Boone in the northwestern corner of the state before crossing into Virginia where is passes Roanoke and ends near Waynesboro. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground (see also National Park Service) byway follows US15 southbound from Gettysburg and the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania through Frederick County in Maryland and Virginia where it continues on state route VA20 to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. This route, which connects to Interstate 70 in Frederick County in Maryland, includes places related to people - James Madison and his Montpelier home, James Monroe and others - that helped establish the United States and the Civil War - Manassas National Battlefield Park, Brandy Station Battlefield, Culpeper National Cemetery, Bremo Slave Chapel, etc. - that tore it asunder for four years within the nation's first century. The General George C. Marshall Home (of World War II and Marshall Plan fame) is also along this route in Loudon County in Virginia. The George Washington Memorial Parkway lies adjacent to the west bank of the Potomac River with part opposite the western area of Washington, DC. Virginia's Scenic Byways published by the Virginia Department of Transportation has information about a number of scenic and historic byways in the state to assist with travel planning and developing driving directions.
