The George Washington Memorial Parkway

This page of our highway log for the parkway provides data for the section from the Arlington Memorial Bridge and Arlington National Cemetery to Daingerfield Island just south of Washington (Ronald Reagan) National Airport.  Scroll down for north-to-south travel.  Continue northbound travel from the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge and Interstate 66 to I-495 in the northernmost section of the parkway.

16.1 25.9 The Esplanade / The Arlington Memorial Bridge crosses the Potomac between the national cemetery and the District of Columbia. 

National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is adjacent to the parkway on the east side via The Esplanade which a primary entrance.  See also Arlington Cemetery

Points of Interest

There are several prominent points of interest within the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery:  Arlington House: The Robert E. Lee Memorial, the Netherlands Carillon, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the President John F. Kennedy Gravesite, the Tomb of the Unknowns, the Memorial Amphitheater, the Nurses Memorial, the Women In Military Service For America Memorial and many other memorials.

National Memorial

Columbia Island was been renamed to Lady Bird Johnson Park in honor of Lady Bird Johnson who was First Lady during the presidency of Lyndon Baines Johnson.  The Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove-on-the-Potomac is within the park 

Memorial

The Navy-Marine Memorial in the Lady Bird Johnson Park honors those who served in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marine.

Parks

The East and West Potomac Parks and the Tidal Basin are to the east via the George Mason Bridge (I-395) and the Rochambeau Bridge.

National Memorial

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial overlooks the Tidal Basin.  This is a particularly good area to observe the annual blooming of the cherry trees.

Military Installation

The Pentagon is a short distance to the west via I-395

Historic Site

Daingerfield Island is now a park.  It is the site of the first permanent Alexandria settlement which was established 1696
