Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Airport Description:  Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is served by international, national and regional carriers with direct flights to other cities in the United States, Canada and other international destinations.  The airport's official web site has flight schedule and destination information for airlines operating out of Dulles.

Airport Location:  The airport is located  in Virginia, approximately 30 miles/48 km west of Washington, DC.

Highway Connections:  The airport is at the western end of the Dulles Airport Access Road that connects with I-495 / The Capital Beltway at Exit 45 and Interstate 66 at Exit 67.  Interstate 66 continues eastbound to Constitution Avenue in Washington.  The Dulles Access Road runs to the northwest as the Dulles Greenway to Leesburg.  State route VA28 at the entrance to the airport connects to the south with US50 and Interstate 66 at Exit 53

Highway Routes from the Airport:  From the airport take the Dulles Airport Access Road/VA267 eastbound for Reston and Tyson's Corner.  The Access Road connect with I-495 which circles Washington, DC.  I-495 north- and eastbound connects with highways for points in Maryland.  For destination points in Maryland, see also Baltimore-Washington International or go to the Maryland airports page.

Interstate 495 south- and eastbound connects with I-95 southbound and continues eastbound to Alexandria in Virginia before crossing into Maryland on the eastern side of Washington, DC.  The Access Road also connects with I-66 which leads eastbound to Washington, DC.  See also Washington National Airport.

The Dulles Airport Access Road/VA267 westbound leads to US15 and VA7.  US15 runs north to Leesburg in Virginia and to points in Maryland.  VA7 runs west to Winchester and connects with Interstate 81.

Parking Facilities:  Long- and short-term parking facilities are available on the airport.  Long-term parking is available off the airport.

Ground Transportation Services:  In keeping with its status as a major airport, a wide variety of services is available. These include Ground Transportation Services to Baltimore, Washington and other points in the surrounding area. Transportation services available include taxis, busses, trains and airporters.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority operates a system that provides transportation to many points in and surrounding Washington, DC.  Rail and bus services are provided to and from Washington National Airport.

An economical and efficient method is to take the Orange Line from Washington to the West Falls Church Metro Station. From there connect to the Dulles Express bus to Dulles airport.  Or use the reverse route from the airport to Washington.

The LinkInfo web site has information about transportation services in the Reston/Herndon area as well as a schedule for the connecting service between the Falls Church Metro Station and the airport.

A more convenient but still economical service is the Washington Flyer which operates directly between the express bus terminal in Washington and the airport.

The OmniRide Family of Transit Services operated by the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission offers a variety of services from points in Washington, DC to Prince William County and the Manassas area.

Amtrak, Acela Regional and the Metroliner provide efficient rail services from Union Station in Washington, DC north to Philadelphia and New York and south to Newport News. Amtrak also provides services on routes to the south and west of Washington.

There are also two rail lines operated by the Virginia Rail Express  that serve routes from Union Station in Washington, DC through Arlington and to other points in Virginia. One line runs to Manassas and Broad Run Airport, and the other serves a number of points en route to Fredricksburg.

The City of Alexandria has a web page with transportation information that could be useful for visitors to Washington area airports.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transit web sites have additional information on traffic and transportation that could be useful for visitors.

The Maryland Mass Transit System operates buses and trains that connect Washington, DC with other points throughout Maryland.

Greyhound long-distance bus services operate from the airport terminal.

Car Rentals:  Major car rental agencies are available on and off the airport.  Local car rental agencies are available off the airport.

Hotels:  There is a good selection of airports in close proximity to the airport and a large selection of hotels and motels throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area.
