National Monument

The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is 6 miles to the north of this intersection.
266.2 428.4 Mitchell:  Junction OR207 / Service Creek-Mitchell Highway northbound to OR19 at Service Creek.  Take Girds Creek Road westbound from OR207 for Twickenham and OR19 at Rowe Creek Road.

BOATING

There is a boat launch to the John Day River west of Twickenham maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.

Historical Marker

There is a historical marker adjacent to the eastbound lane between Mitchell and the Keyes Creek Summit that commemorates H. H. Wheeler for whom Wheeler County was named.  The marker indicates the location where he was attacked and wounded by Indians while carrying mail from The Dalles to Canyon City on September 7, 1866.  Mr. Wheeler was the first president of the East Oregon Pioneer Association.
