historical marker adjacent to the eastbound lane between Mitchell
and the Keyes Creek Summit that commemorates H. H.
Wheeler for whom Wheeler County was named. The marker
indicates the location where he was attacked and wounded by Indians while carrying mail
from The Dalles to Canyon City on September 7, 1866. Mr.
Wheeler was the first president of the East Oregon Pioneer
Association. |
