Interstate and Federal (US) Highways Oregon is a state that offers a wide variety of interesting and scenic routes for visitors and residents. Interstate: Interstate 5 is the major north-to-south route for traffic in Oregon, running from Portland, in the north, through Salem, Albany, Eugene, Roseburg, Grants Pass and Medford to the California state line south of Ashland. There are many scenic and interesting diversions to be found adjacent to this freeway. Interstate 82 runs to the south from its junction with Interstate 90 near Ellensburg in Washington then to the southeast from Yakima to its junction with Interstate 84 near Hermiston in Oregon. Interstate 84 begins in the west at its junction with Interstate 5 in Portland and runs to the east across northern and northwestern Oregon where it passes through Troutdale, The Dalles, Pendleton, La Grande, Baker City and Ontario. The highway continues through southern Idaho to its junction with Interstate 80 southwest of Ogden in Utah. Interstate 205 is known as the East Portland Freeway because it provides a bypass around the Portland Metropolitan Area. It also provides the most convenient access to Portland International Airport. This freeway connects with I-5 north of Vancouver, Washington and south of the Portland metropolitan area in Oregon. US20 is a primary west-to-east route beginning at its junction with US101 in Newport on the Oregon Coast. The highway passes through Corvallis and Albany in the Willamette Valley before crossing the Santiam Pass in the Cascades. It then runs through Sisters and Bend in Central Oregon and Burns and Nyassa in Eastern Oregon before continuing to Boise, Idaho. Logs for US20 east of Boise are planned for future publication. US26 runs west-to-east from its junction with US101 north of Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast to Hillsboro and Portland. It continues eastward on the south side of Mount Hood to Madras, Prineville, John Day, Prairie City and Vale Junction where the highway merges eastbound with US20. US97 is another important north-to-south route that runs from the U.S.-Canada border through Washington state. The highway crosses the Columbia River into Oregon and passes through Moro, Shaniko, Madras, Redmond, Bend, Sunriver and La Pine in Central Oregon and Chemult and Klamath Falls en route to its junction with Interstate 5 at Weed in California. US101 enters Oregon from Washington and runs south from Astoria on the Columbia River through Seaside, Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Newport, Florence, North Bend, Bandon, Gold Beach and Brookings before continuing through California where it ends with its junction at Interstate 5 in Los Angeles. For the most part, the highway is close to the coastline in Oregon and provides many views of its scenic coast. US197 from its northern junction with state route WA14 in Washington southbound through The Dalles and Maupin to its southern junction with US97 in Oregon. US199 connects Interstate 5 at Grants Pass in Oregon with US101 north of Crescent City in California. OR42 runs east to the Oregon Caves National Monument from Cave Junction.
