Welcome to Idaho

Among the many attractions that Idaho has for visitors is a chance to escape to a more relaxed way of life.  Boise, the state capital and its largest city, has some elements of higher-paced living, but in this regard it has a long way to go to catch up with many other places.  Idaho has much to offer in the way of scenery and outdoor recreation.  History buffs will find routes paralleling the Oregon Trail and the Lewis and Clark Trail of great interest.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has a large number of locations throughout the United States that will appeal to travelers with an interest in nature, wildlife, archeology and history. 

The New Perspectives Series on the West on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) web site offers an excellent introduction to the people, places and events that have been prominent parts of the history of the western United States.

The Discover Idaho web site is the official Oregon tourism site and is a good source of information for travelers. 

The state parks and national forests and parks in Idaho offer excellent facilities and recreational opportunities for campers and other visitors.

The Idaho Parks and Recreation Department's web site will provide you with information on the state parks throughout the state.

The State of Idaho has a collection of useful maps on its web site to help with travel planning.

The National Forest Service maintains several properties in Idaho.  These include the Boise, Caribou, Challis, Clearwater, Idaho Panhandle, Nez Perce, Payette, Salmon, Sawtooth and Targee National Forests.

The National Park Service is the custodian of a number of excellent sites in Idaho that include the City of Rocks National Reserve, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, Nez Perce National Historic Park, part of the Oregon National Historic Trail, and a section of Yellowstone National Park. 

The Bureau of Land Management web site has a number of topics of interest to travelers, including archeological and historical sites, native tribes, culture and wildlife in Idaho.

The Public Lands Information Center has a web site that is another excellent source of information for visitors to Idaho.

Recommended Reading:  

Big Trouble, by J Anthony Lukas, will be of interest to visitors to Caldwell, where the bombing death of former governor Frank Stuenenberg occurred.  The story will also be enjoyed by many other readers.  The crime became one of national significance when a member of a labor union was charged and defended by Clarence Darrow, one of America's most famous lawyers.

Roadside Geology of Idaho by David Alt and Donald Hyndman is one of an excellent series that explains the geology in a number of states and will be of interest to many visitors to Idaho.

Roadside History of Idaho by Betty Derig is a volume in another series that describes places of interest along many of the highways in Idaho.
