People involved in travel planning for international destinations can learn more about countries in which they plan to travel can acquire very interesting perspectives by learning about humanitarian activities and human rights issues in those countries.

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) have shown enormous courage in volunteering their skills to tend to the ill and injured in many countries around the world.  Médecins Sans Frontières was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 for its work.

Mercy Corps, which is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, has been noted for its rapid responses to many crises around the world, most recently in the areas affected by the tsunami in southern Asia and the flooding of New Orleans.

Oxfam International has played for many years and continues to play an important role in helping to alleviate the burdens associated with poverty and underdevelopment in countries throughout Asia, the Pacific, Africa and South American.

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, is the lead organization in attempting to get governments around the world to end production of land mines and their use which has made expansive areas of many countries unsafe for human habitation.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees are two arms of this international body working to alleviate the suffering of millions of children and refugees. 

Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for its work defending prisoners of conscience around the world and seeking to obtain their release and freedom.

Human Rights Watch tracks all countries where the human rights of their citizens are abused.  This site, along with that of Amnesty International, will be of interest to travelers concerned with the possibility of human rights abuses in countries in which they may intend traveling.
