Route Planning and Maps

The links on this page lead to web sites that offer route planning and distance calculation services and on-line maps that can be very useful; however, TravelData21 does not vouch for the accuracy of results they may provide.

The Automobile Association (AA) and the RAC Motoring Services (RAC) have excellent route planning functions on their web sites to calculate distances and determine driving directions.  Both sites also offer information on traffic conditions.  There are differences in their products which will cause users to find one preferable to the other in some cases while the other may be the favored choice in other situations.  Both of these organizations are excellent resources for a wide range of travel products and services.

Transport Direct provides information for planning door-to-door travel by public transport and automobile around Britain; that is, England, Scotland and Wales.  This site also has a very useful mapping system.

Map24UK is another route planning site that covers the United Kingdom, Ireland and Continental Europe.

Ordnance Survey is the national mapping agency for the United Kingdom and offers an excellent on-line mapping system.  Ordnance Survey Ireland is the counterpart for the Republic of Ireland but without on-line maps.

The web site for the Association of British Counties is an excellent resource for locating places using the traditional county names and borders that were in use prior to national administrative reorganization in 1965.  This site has a very good map of the traditional counties which can still be useful for locating places.  TravelData21 follows the current official political boundaries for the most part but includes cities that are now defined as independent unitary authorities under their traditional county names. In some cases new counties are combined within their old county.

The British Towns and Villages Network has collections of useful maps for Great Britain.  Detail varies with locations.

The National Geographic web site and its Map Machine have excellent maps for this country and other locations around the world.  The Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection at the University of Texas has on-line maps for this and other nations.

England:  The Boundary Committee for England has a collection of large maps with very good detail for many areas in England.  Some maps just show political areas such as wards and county overview, but several cities have detailed maps.  Many are large files requiring long download time.

The MAGIC web-based interactive maps for England can be very useful; although, some maps only occupy a small portion of the computer's screen, but they provide good detail and views can be moved around selected location.  Other maps for Scotland and Wales are available but only with limited detail.

Traffic England has a collection of useful maps showing major highways and reports on road and traffic conditions.

The Pictures of England has maps of England along with county and regional information.

Nature on the Map has an interactive map of England showing nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest.

Scotland:  Scottish Development International has a collection of useful maps for the country and its regionsVisit Scotland, the official web site of the Scotland's National Tourist Board, has clickable maps with introductory descriptions of regions.  About Scotland has clickable maps that could be very helpful with travel planning. The Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board has an excellent road map covering Aberdeen and the Grampian region.  The Scottish Maps, Regions and Places published by the Geography Department of the University of Edinburgh has links to a variety of related topics and maps. This department also publishes the very useful Gazeteer for Scotland, which has a very good maps of the council areas as of 1995, and Gateway to Scotland.  The National Library of Scotland has a collection of historical maps.  The Clans of Scotland are shown on a very good map published on the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center in Alaska.

The Traffic Scotland web site can be helpful for planning trips by road in Scotland offering advice on road works and other factors affecting traffic. The Traveline Scotland web site is an excellent resource for planning travel by public transportation.  The Scottish Towns web site also has useful maps of counties along with descriptions of places.

Wales:  Data-Wales has a collection of maps showing current unitary authorities, the tradition counties and other historical data that apply to Wales.  The National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth has a collection of historical maps of Wales.

The Nature On The Map web site is designed to show locations of nature sites, but it can also be useful for developing driving directions for other uses.

Multimap and Streetmap also excellent sites for obtaining maps of places in Britain.  The Highway Agency is a very good resource for conditions on roads, mostly motorways, in England.  This site has a useful map of motorways and some major roads in England.
