Greenwich (pronounced gren-itch) is a borough of London that has had a long historical association with navigation and exploring and is intimately identified with Greenwich Mean Time. Central Greenwich is approximately 7 miles/11 km east of central London by road. Rail and bus services provide easy and efficient transportation to other parts of London. The Greenwich Council web site has visitor information for the many places of interest located here. The meridian line distinguishing east from west is laid out in Greenwich. The city's latest achievement is in being the home of the Millennium Dome. The Docklands Light Railway has stations that serve Greenwich. South Eastern Trains operate from London to Greenwich and other parts of south London, Kent and areas of east Sussex, including London-Gatwick Airport. Use the North Kent timetables for Greenwich. Greenwich Park is on the south bank of the River Thames in an area sometimes referred to as Maritime or Old Greenwich. Within this area are three are three famous sites - the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum, and the old Royal Naval College - that will appeal to people with an interest in the history of navigation and exploration.
