Greater London

Greater London comprises the boroughs listed below; although, the City of London is not strictly speaking a borough but a corporation.  Many of their web sites will be of interest to visitors.  The Hillingdon Borough web site has a useful map showing all of the boroughs in the Greater London area along with surrounding counties.  Among the better-known and more popular with visitors are those in the table below.  Click on the link to go to our pages with additional information and links.

The City of London, administrative center for many activities in the area and locale for the Guildhall, Mansion House, St. Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum, the British Library and many historic buildings.  Map
The City of Westminster is where you will find the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and many places of national and historic importance.  Map
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea combines two of the more fashionable districts along with places of historic and cultural interest.  Map
Greenwich is identified with a number of historic buildings and its particular connections to navigation and the maritime world.  Map
The Royal Borough of  Kingston-upon-Thames [Map] and the Borough of Richmond upon Thames [Map] represent two of the best suburban areas in Greater London and offer convenient access to Hampton Court, Royal Kew Gardens, Wimbledon and several other places of historic and scenic interest. 
The Borough of Southwark is home to the Festival Hall, the National Theatre, the New Globe Theatre and several buildings of historic interest.  Map
The Borough of Tower Hamlets is most noted for the Tower of London and Tower Bridge along with many new and historic places of interest.  Map

Barking and Dagenham adjoins Essex.  The Eastbury Manor House is located here and maintained by the National Trust.  Map
Barnet offers many cultural and athletic activities for its people and is home to the Church Farmhouse Museum.  Map
Bexley is a suburban area east of central London on the south side of the Thames.  It has several places of interest within its district and provides convenient access to many others in Kent.  Map
Brent is a residential and business community in northwest Greater London.  Map
Bromley is a residential and business community in southeastern Greater London.  It has several places of historic interest including Biggin Hill airport, which played a prominent role in the Battle of Britain during World War II, and Down House, the home of Charles Darwin.  Map
Camden is a popular area for a variety of cultural activities and historic sites with Covent Garden, Hampstead and Hampstead Heath, Highgate and Highgate Cemetery, Lincoln's Inn, Fitzrovia, Bloomsbury and Camden Town within its boundaries.  Map
Croydon is a suburban area in the southern area of Greater London with several places of interest for visitors.  The borough is convenient to Gatwick airport.  Map
Ealing is a residential and commercial area.  The Pitzhanger Manor House and Gallery is a place of historical and cultural interest.  Map
Enfield is in the northern area of Greater London and has several places of historical and cultural interest Map
Hackney is a commercial and residential area north of Tower Hamlets.  The Brickfields site provides an introduction to the borough and its history.  Sutton House is a National Trust property within the borough.  Map
Hammersmith and Fulham borough is a commercial and residential area west of central London.  Map
Haringey is north of the City of London.  Its most prominent place of interest is Alexandra Palace which is now used as a hotel and conference center.  Map
Harrow is a suburb to the northwest of central London and a place of historical and scenic interest.  Among its claims to fame is Harrow School where Winston Churchill and six other Prime Ministers received their early education. 
Havering is north of the City of London and has several places of historic and cultural interest including Rainham Hall, a National Trust property.  Map
Hillingdon is the westernmost borough in Greater London and is home to Heathrow airport.  It offers a variety of amenities and places of interest for visitors.  This borough's site has a useful map of the area.
Hounslow is a residential and commercial suburb to the east of Heathrow airport. Osterly Park is a National Trust property in the borough.  Map
Islington is a residential and commercial suburb on the north side of the City of London.  Map
Lambeth is a residential and commercial suburb on the south side of the River Thames opposite the City of Westminster.  William Blake, the poet, engraver and mystic lived in Lambeth when he produced much of his work.  Map
Lewisham is a residential and commercial suburb on the south side of the river between Southwark and Greenwich.  Map
Merton includes Wimbledon, home of the internationally famous tennis tournament, within its borough. The Wimbledon Visitor and the South London Tourism web sites are good resources for planning travel in this area. Morden Hall Park is a National Trust property in Morden, near Wimbledon and east of Kingston.  Map
Newham is a residential and commercial suburb in east London with places of cultural and historic interest.  Map
Redbridge is a residential and commercial suburb in the northeastern area of Greater London.  Map
Sutton  is a residential and commercial suburb in the southern area of Greater London.  Map
Waltham Forest is a residential and commercial suburb in the northern area of Greater London.  Map
Wandsworth is on the south side of the River Thames and has several places of historic interest.  Battersea Park and its Children's Zoo are popular attractions.  Map
