Welcome to Yorkshire

This section on Yorkshire includes the counties of North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire as well as the City of York.  These counties in northeastern England are a combination of industrial and agricultural areas with many places of scenic and historic interest.   

North Yorkshire County is the largest county in England stretching from its coast on the North Sea to its western border with Lancashire.  Northallerton is the county town.  The City of York is a unitary authority within the county.  Craven District, Hambleton District, Harrogate Borough, Richmondshire District, Ryedale District, Scarborough and Selby District are part of North Yorkshire. These tourist web sites also apply to North Yorkshire: Ryedale Folk Museum, Scarborough Town Talk, Captain Cook Country and Castle Howard

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden have been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  They are near Ripon Rievaulx Abbey lies near the River Rye in the North York Moors National Park.

The Captain Cook Memorial Museum at Whitby honors this great navigator who began his maritime career in this port on the Yorkshire coast.  The Remains of Whitby Abbey overlook the town.

Settle, an attractive market town in Ribblesdale, is at the southern end of the Settle-Carlisle Railway line.  Thirsk is a market town noted for its race course and the setting for the country vet stories in the James Herriot novels that delighted so many people around the world.

South Yorkshire comprises Barnsley Metropolitan Borough, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough, Sheffield City and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough.  The Pennine Yorkshire web site has tourist information. 

Creswell Crags, home of the Ice Age Hunter, is south of Doncaster Roche Abbey is convenient to Sheffield and Doncaster.

West Yorkshire includes Bradford City, Calderdale, Kirklees, the City of Leeds and Wakefield.  The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television is in Bradford.  Saltaire has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.  The Brontė Country, Brontė Birthplace and Brontė Parsonage Museum web sites provide information about the Brontė family and associated places that are among the most popular attractions for visitors to West Yorkshire. Ilkley is an attractive village in Wharfedale.  Bolton Abbey is a nearby historic site.

The East Riding includes the communities of Beverley, Bridlington, Cottingham, Pocklington and Woodmansey.  Kingston upon Hull, more commonly referred to as "Hull" is an independent unitary authority attached geographically to the East Riding on the north bank of the River Humber.  Visit East Yorkshire has tourism information for the East Riding.  Beverley Minster is one of the most attractive but, nevertheless, overlooked churches in England.  Photo of Beverley Minster

These county-based web sites are very good resources for planning travel:  Yorkshire Tourism Board, the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Dales (2), Yorkshire's Great Houses, Castles and GardensStately Homes and the Yorkshire Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

Recommended Reading:  The novels and biographies of James Herriot, the Yorkshire vet, will give readers an appreciation of life in the Yorkshire Dales.  The Best of James Herriot combines selected stories with a guide to some of Herriot's favorite places.  This latter book is beautifully illustrated.

The novels of the Brontė sisters and D. H. Lawrence were set in this region.

The guides published in the Ordnance Survey Leisure Guide series for the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Northumbria are an excellent combination of text, beautiful graphics and detailed maps.

These regional and national web site are good resources for planning travel to Yorkshire and the surrounding area:  Northumbria Tourist Board, the Peak District National Park and Peak District Tourism and the Northeast England History Pages.

The English Tourist Board and the British Tourist Authority web sites are primary sources of information for visitors to England.   Many of the web sites listed on the UK and Ireland home page are also good sources of information for planning travel in this area of England.

The National Trust and English Heritage web sites have information about places of historic interest in and around this region.
