Lancaster is in Lancashire in northwestern England and a city of historic interest. The Duchy of Lancaster was established in the reign of Henry III. There are several buildings of historic interest in and around Lancaster, including the castle which is open for tours. The network also extends northwards to Glasgow in Scotland and southwards to Liverpool, Manchester (and Manchester airport), Chesterfield, Lincoln and Grimsby in England. Stations in northeastern England include Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Whitby. The Virgin Trains system is the closest to a national system in that it serves England (except East Anglia and the southeast), Scotland and Wales.
