Welcome to the Kumamoto Prefecture Kumamoto Prefecture is on the island and region of Kyushu which is across from the Chugoku Region at the southwestern end of Honshu, Japan's principal island. The official web site for the prefecture has an English version with information about the prefecture including tourism and transportation. The Kumamoto Tour Guide has information in English on tourism in and around the city. The Kumamoto City International Center can be a useful resource for visitors. The Minamata city web site has information in English about places of interest for visitors, including the memorial and museum devoted to the Minamata disease caused by mercury poisoning in the 1950s. The Unzen-Amakusa National Park is to the south of the Saga prefecture and to the west of the Kumamoto prefecture. The Aso-Kuju National Park extends over the Kumamoto and Oita prefectures.
