The island and region of Kyushu is across the Shimonoseki Strait from the Chugoku Region at the southwestern end of Honshu, Japan's principal island. The island chain that forms the Okinawa prefecture lies to the southwest of the Kagoshima prefecture. The Kyushu Tourist Information web site is a useful resource to begin travel plans for this island. The Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Oita and Saga prefectures combine to form the prefecture. Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Nagasaki are among the better-known cities on the island. Fukuoka has an international airport, Kagoshima has ferry services to other island, and Nagasaki is indelibly associated with the atomic bomb dropped on it at the end of World War II. The Saikai National Park extends through the islands in the northwestern area of Kyushu to the west of Nagasaki and Saga prefectures. |
