Welcome to Tokyo

The prefecture and metropolitan area of Tokyo is in the Kanto Region which is centrally located on Honshu, Japan's principal island.

The official web site for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has an English version with information about the prefecture including tourism and transportation.

The Tokyo Sightseeing Comprehensive Guide published by the metro government is a very good multi-lingual resource for travel planning.  The Tokyo Convention and Visitors Bureau and Tokyo Journey web sites also excellent sources of information in English for discovering this capital city.

The Toei Transportation Information is a service of the metropolitan government with information on its subway and bus services.

The East Japan Railway Company, Keikyu Electric Express Railway, Tokyo Metro, Odakyu Electric Railway and the Keisei Electric Railway operate rail services in and around Tokyo.

The Chiyoda, Hachioji, Kokubunji, Meguro, Minato, Mitaka, Musashimurayama, Okutama, Sumida, Taito and Toshima web sites have information in English about these cities within the Tokyo Metropolitan Area.

Several major embassies are located in Nishitokyo (New Tokyo).  The Embassy Avenue web site has links to embassies in Tokyo.

The Izu Islands that lie to the south of Tokyo Bay are in the Tokyo prefecture and form part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.  This park extends from Yamanashi and Kanagawa prefectures to the Izu Islands.  The Ogasawara National Park is in the Ogasawara archipelago which is about 620 miles /  1,000 km south of Tokyo.

Airports:  There are two airports that serve the Tokyo area:

Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) is to the east of Tokyo in Chiba prefecture.  It is used mainly for international flights and a limited number of domestic flights.  The airport's official web site is an excellent resource for flight information and airport-related services.

There is a plentiful supply of taxis and limousines operating from Narita airport, but international visitors should be advised that they will likely find rates for these services to be very high.  There is also a good supply of buses to Tokyo and surrounding cities and to rail stations.

There is a special bus service to Yokosuka Naval Base from Narita.

The Japan National Tourist Organization web site has very useful information on Narita and other international airports in Japan.

Haneda Airport, formerly the main airport for Tokyo, is now used for domestic flights.  There is also a good supply of ground transportation services from Haneda to surrounding communities as well as rail stations in the area.

There are airports with flights to Tokyo on Oshima, Miyakejima and Hachijojima Islands in the Izu Island chain south of Tokyo Bay.

The United States National Weather Service is a very good English-language source for weather information at Tokyo.
