Welcome to the Shiga Prefecture

Shiga Prefecture is located in the Kansai Region is the southwestern area of Honshu, Japan's main island.

The official web site for the prefecture has an English version with information about the prefecture including tourism and transportation.

The Gokasho, Hikone, Kusatsu, Omihachiman and Otsu web sites have information in English about places of interest and events in their cities.

The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Hikone-Jo (castle) is on a tentative list for World Heritage Status by UNESCO.

The Hieizan (Mount Hiei), the Lake Biwa Museum and the Miho Museum are other places of cultural and historical interest in the Shiga prefecture.
