The Kansai Region (sometimes referred to as Kinki) is in the southwestern area of Honshu, the principal island of Japan. The Chubu Region and Tokyo are to the east and the Chugoku Region is to the west. The Sea of Japan is on the region's northern coast and the Pacific Ocean and the Harima Sea are on the southern coast. The island and region of Shikoku is to the south across the Harima Sea.
The Hyogo, Kyoto, Mie, Nara, Osaka, Shiga and Wakayama prefectures form the Kansai Region. Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe are the major cities in the region.
