Welcome to the Shimane Prefecture The Shimane Prefecture is part of the Chugoku Region which is located at the southwestern end of the island of Honshu. The prefecture includes the Oki Islands of Dōgo and Dōzen. The official web site for the prefecture has an English version with information about the prefecture including tourism and transportation. The prefecture's web pages on sightseeing in Shimane is a very good source of information in English with useful maps to assist with travel planning. The Historic Silver Mine of Iwami Ginzan is on a tentative list for World Heritage Status by UNESCO. See also the official Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine web site. The Daisen-Oki National Park is in the Shimane prefecture. The Matsue and Gotsu city web sites have information about their communities and places of interest to visitors. Airports: Iwami (Higa-Iwami) Airport and Izumo Airport have flights to other airports in Japan. Oki Airport has inter-island flights to Izumo. |
