The Chugoku Region is at the southwestern of Honshu, Japan's principal island. At the extreme western end of the island is the Shimonoseki Strait that separates Honshu from the island and prefecture of Kyushu. The Seto Inland Sea is on the region's southern coast, between it and the island and prefecture of Shikoku. The Sea of Japan is on the northern coast. The Kansai (Kinki) Region is to the east of Chugoku.
The prefectures of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori and Yamaguchi are part of this region.
