Lucknow is the capital of the state. Uttar Pradesh is in north-central India with the India Capital Territory of Delhi and the states of Haryana and Rajasthan to the west. Madhya Pradesh is to the south, and Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are adjacent at the southeastern corner of the state. Bihar is to the east. Uttaranchal and Nepal on the northern border. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism web site has an extensive range of related information and a map of the state to assist with travel planning. The Forest Department has information about eco-tourism, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in Uttar Pradesh. This site has a useful interactive map of the state to help locate attractions. The web site for the North Central Zone Cultural Center provides an introduction to the arts and culture of this part of India that includes the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Archaeology has information about World Heritage Sites and other places of interest in the state. Agra Fort, the Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal in the Agra District have been declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The Ancient Buddhist Site at Sarnath near Varanasi is on a tentative list for World Heritage Status by UNESCO. The Rampur Raza Library in Rampur was founded by Nawab Faizullah Khan in 1774 AD. It is a treasure house of Indo Islamic learning and Art. The library building itself is of considerable historical and architectural interest. Airports: Agra, Dehradun, Kanpur, Lucknow and Varanasi airports handle domestic flights. They are all within short distances of their respective cities. |
