Welcome to Tamil Nadu

Chennai (formerly Madras) is the state capital.  Tamil Nadu occupies the eastern side of the southern tip of India.  Its eastern coast lies along the Coromandel Coast, the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar.  The states of Kerala and Karnataka are to the west and Andhra Pradesh is to the north.  The Union Territory of Pondicherry is within Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast south of Chennai.

The web site for the Raj Bhavan (governor's residences) at Chennai and Udhagamandalam has a history of these historic buildings and their present and former occupants.

The official web site for tourism has information on a wide variety of topics and is an excellent resource for planning travel to this area.  This site also has a useful map of the state showing its districts.  The Pondicherry Tourism web site also has useful maps, a distance chart and transportation information to help with travel planning in Tamil Nadu.

The South Zone Cultural Center has information about various forms of arts, theater and cultural events.

The Great Living Chola Temples and the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram
in the Chingleput District have been declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.  The Western Ghats (sub cluster nomination) with locations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are on a tentative list for World Heritage Status by UNESCO.

Airports:  Chennai Airport has international and domestic flights. Coimbatore, Madurai and Thrichy airports handle domestic flights.
