Chennai (formerly Madras) is the state capital. Tamil Nadu occupies the eastern side of the southern tip of India. Its eastern coast lies along the Coromandel Coast, the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. The states of Kerala and Karnataka are to the west and Andhra Pradesh is to the north. The Union Territory of Pondicherry is within Tamil Nadu on the Coromandel Coast south of Chennai.
