Bhubaneswar is the state's capital. Orissa is in the northeastern area of India to the southwest of Kolkata (Calcutta). West Bengal is on the state's northeastern border, Bihar and Jharkhand are to the north, Chhattisgarh is to the west, and Andhra Pradesh is to the south. The Bay of Bengal is to the east. The web site for the Raj Bhavan (governor's residence) has information about this historic building and the garden, deer park, and other parts of the complex. This site also has a very useful map of Orissa showing the locations of cities and districts. The government's official web site has information that provides a very good introduction to places of interest, tourism, culture, heritage, arts and crafts, fairs and festivals, and matters dealing with state administration. The Department of Tourism has information on a variety of related topics, including transportation to assist with travel planning. The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Department also has information that will be helpful to visitors. The Kapilash Temple, Shri Jagannath Dham at Puri (very useful maps on this site), and the Sun Temple at Konark are important destinations for visitors with an interest in the religions of India. The Sun Temple at Konārak in the Puri District has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Orissa State Archaeological Department is another very good resource for discovering places and monuments of historical and other interests. The Bhitarkanika National Park is a major attraction in Orissa. Airport: Biju Patnaik Airport serves Bhubaneswar with domestic flights. It is on the south side of the city. |
