Gandhinagar is the state's capital. Gujarat is on the west coast of India where it is faces the Arabian Sea. Rajasthan is to the north and northeast, Madhya Pradesh is to the east and Maharashtra is to the south and southeast. The official portal for the Gujarat government has an extensive amount of information about tourism opportunities and places of scenic, cultural and historic interest in the state. The Gujarat Information Department is another very good source of information for visitors. The official web site for tourism in Gujarat is multi-lingual and is an excellent resource for travel planning. The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park in the Panchmahal District has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Dholavira, a Harappan City, the Rani-ki-Vav (The Queen's Stepwell) at Patan, and the Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch are on a tentative list for World Heritage Status by UNESCO. Airports: Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport handles international and domestic flights. It is about 5 miles / 8 km from the city. Anand, Bhavnagar, Bhuj, Diu, Jamnagar, Keshoo, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara (Baroda) have smaller airports for domestic traffic that are in close proximity to their cities. |
