Guwahati (Gauhati) is the state capital. Assam is in the northeastern corner of India where it adjoins Bhutan on the north and Arunachal Pradesh on the north and east. Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram are to the south. Bangladesh is to the south and west. The northern area of West Bengal is also to the west. The Kaziranga National Park and the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary have been declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Airports: Borjharm, Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Jorhat, Silchar and Tezpur (Tejpur) airports handle domestic flights. They are all close to their respective towns. |
